Canada: GST, HST, PST and QST

There are pages for all 13 provinces and territories. In SeroPOS each tax is a rate, and a tax group combines them, for example a BC tax group of GST at 5% plus PST at 7%. HST provinces use a single rate, Quebec combines GST and QST, and the territories charge GST alone. Set a default tax and give each product the tax it needs, including exempt items at 0%.

Receipts show your tax label and number, and the Daily Sales Report breaks sales into net, GST and PST with a tax summary for remittance. QuickBooks Desktop's Canadian edition receives GST, HST, PST and QST with the tax structure built for you.

United States: state and local sales tax

There are pages for 15 states. Enter the combined state and local rate that applies where you sell as a tax rate, group rates if you need to show them separately, and mark exempt products with a 0% rate. Each location carries its own address, tax label and number, and receipt details, so a store in each state prints the right information.

The Tax Report shows tax collected on sales against tax paid on purchases and expenses, filtered by location and date. QuickBooks Desktop's US edition receives sales tax as sales tax items.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up GST and PST in SeroPOS?

In Admin, open Taxes. Add each rate, such as GST 5% and PST 7%, then create a tax group that combines them, for example BC Tax. Make the group your default tax, and give products that are PST-exempt the GST rate on its own. Your receipts and the Daily Sales Report then show GST and PST separately.

Does SeroPOS handle HST?

Yes. In Ontario and the Atlantic provinces that charge HST, add HST as a single rate and set it as the default tax. Products that are zero-rated or exempt get a 0% rate. The Daily Sales Report and the Tax Report show the tax collected for your return, and QuickBooks Desktop receives it under the matching tax code.

Can SeroPOS calculate US sales tax?

Yes. Enter the combined state and local rate as a tax rate, set it as the default, and mark non-taxable products with a 0% rate. If you sell in more than one state, create a rate for each and assign the right one to products. The back office also has one-click US state rates. The Tax Report shows tax collected by location and date.

Can I have different tax rates at different locations?

Yes. Create a tax rate or tax group for each region, such as GST alone for Alberta and GST plus PST for British Columbia, and assign them to the products sold there. The tax setup in the back office offers one-click Canadian and US state rates and a tax matrix by product category and destination. Reports filter by location, so each store's tax can be checked.
