Split the bill evenly, by item or by amount

When a table asks for separate cheques, SeroPOS splits the bill the way they want: evenly, by percentage, item by item or by amounts you type, and each guest pays their own share.

Splitting a bill in SeroPOS

Separate cheques are a normal part of restaurant and bar service, and a slow split holds up the whole table. In SeroPOS the split starts from the payment screen. On tablets tap the Split chip on the payment screen; on phones open Adjust and choose Split. The Create Split panel shows the bill total and asks for a split type and the number of splits.

The till then builds a row for each share. Staff can adjust the amounts, take each payment as the guest is ready and see what is still due. Because every share is paid on its own, a guest who wants to pay by card can do so while their friend counts out cash, and each gets the right change.

Four ways to split

Even divides the total into equal shares, which is the quickest choice when friends agree to split it down the middle. Percent lets one guest pay 60 percent and another 40, useful when a couple splits a group bill unevenly. Custom lets you type an amount on each row, for the guest who says they will put $40 towards it.

Item Wise is for tables where everyone pays for what they ordered. Tap Items on a row to open Split Payment Products and pick the items that guest had; the row total follows the items chosen. Shared plates can be given to one guest or handled with a Custom row. The split does not change the order itself, so the kitchen and reports still see one table.

  • Even: equal shares
  • Percent: a percentage per share
  • Item Wise: items chosen per guest
  • Custom: an amount typed per share

Paying each share

The Split Payments section lists every share with its own payment method, card type, tip, amount due and change. Choose Cash, Card or a custom tender, take the payment and move to the next row. Card shares are sent to the connected terminal one at a time, and any tip entered on the terminal comes back with that share.

On tablets the bill shows Hold until every share is paid. If one guest steps away to the cash machine, hold the bill, serve someone else and come back to it. When the last share is settled, Continue completes the sale and prints the receipt. Clear is blocked while a split is open, so a half-paid bill cannot be wiped by mistake.

Splitting in QSR Mode

At a quick-service counter the split is lighter. Tap Split under the QSR cart and a numpad opens showing the remaining amount. Type the amount the first person is paying and tap their tender, such as Cash or Credit. That leg is recorded and the remaining amount drops. Repeat until nothing is left, and the sale completes.

This suits the common counter request of 'put $20 on cash and the rest on my card', as well as friends paying for one order between them. The Split button can be hidden in QSR Settings if your counter never splits, and role permissions can limit who is allowed to use it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill in SeroPOS?

On a tablet, open the payment screen and tap the Split chip. On a phone, tap Adjust on the payment screen and choose Split. Pick Even, Percent, Item Wise or Custom, set the number of splits, then take a payment for each share until the bill is settled.

Can each guest pay for only their own items?

Yes. Choose the Item Wise split type, then tap Items on each row to open Split Payment Products and pick what that guest ordered. The row total follows the items selected, and each guest pays their share with the payment method they prefer.

Can guests split the bill between cash and card?

Yes. Each share in a split has its own payment method, so one guest can pay cash, another by debit or credit on the card terminal and another with a custom tender. Change is worked out for each cash share separately.

What happens if one guest leaves before paying their share?

On tablets, the split bill shows Hold until every share is paid. Hold it and the order waits in Held Sales while you serve other guests. Resume it when they return to collect the remaining share, then tap Continue to finish the sale and print the receipt.

Can I split a bill by seat?

SeroPOS does not record seats on an order, so there is no split by seat. Use Item Wise instead and pick the items for each guest, or use Even or Custom splits. The result is the same: each guest pays for their own share.
