POS for convenience stores

A corner store sells hundreds of small items to people in a hurry, often with one person behind the counter. SeroPOS keeps the scan-and-pay loop short and keeps track of the cash that leaves the drawer.

What you get

Convenience stores in SeroPOS

Scan and pay

Scan into the product search with a USB scanner or the camera, then take cash or card from the same screen.

Cash pay-outs

Record money taken from the drawer for a supplier or a delivery with an amount and a note, and print a slip.

Low-stock alerts

Give each product an alert quantity and the back office dashboard lists the ones running low.

Shift counts

Open the register with a float and close it with the counted cash, one shift per cashier.

Open-price items

Ring up an item with no barcode at a price the cashier types, without creating a product first.

Integrated card terminals

Card sales go to a Global Payments, Moneris or Gravity Payments terminal, so the amount is never keyed twice.

Fast scanning for a short line

Plug a USB or keyboard-wedge scanner into the till and scan straight into the search field. An exact SKU match drops the item into the cart, and a second scan adds one more. Phones and tablets can scan with the camera, and the phone layout works on a small handheld if you want a second point of sale by the coolers on busy evenings.

Turn on Retail Mode and the till uses shop wording, shows one New Sale button and hides tables, kitchen tickets and other restaurant screens. Products you sell often can be coloured on the product grid so staff find them quickly when an item won't scan. Hold lets the clerk park a basket while a customer runs back for milk, then serve the next person.

Money in, money out

Convenience stores pay for things out of the till: the bread delivery, a window cleaner, a refund for a broken item. Cash Pay Out records the amount and a note, warns that it can't be reversed and prints a slip for the drawer. Payouts show on the day's sales report, so the counted cash still balances.

Each shift starts with Open Register and the float, and ends with Close Register and the counted total. The Register Report in the back office keeps each session with the user, times, cash, card slips and status. If a till is short, you know which shift and which person to ask.

Keeping the shelves stocked

Give each product an alert quantity, and the back office dashboard shows a Product Stock Alert table of everything at or below it. Lead time and reorder quantity fields sit on the product too, so whoever does the ordering knows how much to ask for. Supplier deliveries are entered as purchases, which raises stock and records the cost.

Units and sub-units handle cartons and singles: receive a case of drinks and sell by the can. The Trending Products report shows your top sellers by category and date, and the Stock Report gives stock value at cost and at selling price. For a store with dated goods, turn on expiry tracking for the products that need it.

Items without a barcode

Not everything on the counter has a barcode. Open-price items let the cashier type a price for a one-off item, and the line still shows on the receipt and in reports. For things you sell every day, such as coffee from the machine or a hot snack, add a product with a fixed price and put it on the grid.

Card sales go to an integrated terminal from Global Payments, Moneris or Gravity Payments. If a card prompt stalls, the till keeps a record of the approved charge and warns before a second charge of the same amount, which protects a busy clerk from double-charging a customer. A Check on Terminal button reads the terminal's batch to confirm whether a card really went through.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best POS for a convenience store?

Look for fast barcode scanning, cash handling with pay-outs, shift counts and low-stock alerts at a price that suits a small store. SeroPOS covers these on the Standard plan at $30 a month for one location and three users, with a 14-day free trial and no card to start.

Can I record cash taken from the till?

Yes. Cash Pay Out records the amount and a note, prints a slip and shows on the daily sales report under payouts. It can't be reversed, so the drawer count at the end of the shift matches what actually happened.

Does SeroPOS work with my barcode scanner?

Most USB scanners work as a keyboard, typing the code into the search field, and SeroPOS adds the matching product. No driver is needed. Phones and tablets can also scan with the built-in camera, which needs an internet connection on phones to look up the SKU.

Does SeroPOS have age verification for tobacco or alcohol?

There is no built-in ID scan or age prompt. Staff check ID as they do today. You can still track tobacco and alcohol stock, sell by the pack or carton with sub-units, and see sales of each category in the reports.

Can I see which cashier was short?

Yes. Each cashier opens and closes their own register session. The Register Report lists every session with the user, open and close times, cash, card slips and cheques, and the closing note the cashier left. Pay-outs and refunds appear on that day's sales report, so you can see what left the drawer.
