Open and close the register every shift

Start each shift by counting the float into the till, and finish it by counting what is there. SeroPOS keeps both numbers so every shift can be checked later.

Why open and close the register

Cash is the easiest part of the business to lose track of. Without a record of what was in the drawer at the start and the end of each shift, a shortage could have happened at any time, on anyone's watch. Opening and closing the register ties each stretch of cash handling to a person and a time.

SeroPOS keeps this simple. At the start of the shift the cashier counts the float and enters it. At the end they count the drawer and enter the total with a note. The two figures, together with the sales and pay outs in between, show whether the shift balanced. Each session is kept, so you can look back at any of them.

Opening and closing at the till

Open the side drawer and choose Open/Close Register. The screen explains what to do: open a shift with the cash float, or close it with the counted total. To open, type the float amount and tap OPEN. Sales from then on belong to that register session until it is closed.

At the end of the shift, count the drawer, type the total, add a closing note and tap CLOSE. Closing does not print a report on its own, so print the daily sales report from DSR in the side drawer for the full breakdown. Many businesses staple the report to the count sheet and keep them together for the week.

Register details in the back office

The web back office has its own register screens. Register details show the shift's totals by payment method: cash, cheque, card, bank transfer, advance payments and custom methods, along with total sales, refunds and credit sales. Closing from the back office lets you enter the closing cash, the number of card slips and cheques, and a closing note.

The Register Report lists every session with the user, open and close times, location, card slips, cheques, cash and whether it is open or closed. Open any session for its details. Role permissions decide who can view and close registers, so a cashier can run their own shift while only managers review the history.

Balancing the cash

To check a shift, take the counted cash, subtract the opening float, and compare it with cash sales minus pay outs and cash refunds. The daily sales report has a Reconciliation section and payments by method to make this quick. If the figures match, the shift balanced. If they do not, look at pay out notes, refunds and voids first.

Keep the float the same every day, such as $200 in set denominations, so opening is fast and differences stand out. Count the drawer away from the counter, and have two people count when the amount is large. A short note at closing saves a lot of guessing a week later.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open the register at the start of a shift?

Open the side drawer, choose Open/Close Register, enter the cash float you have counted into the drawer and tap OPEN. Sales from then on belong to that session. At the end of the shift, use the same screen to close it with the counted total.

Does closing the register print a report?

Closing records the counted total and your note but does not print a report itself. Open DSR (Daily Sale Report) from the side drawer, choose the period and tap PRINT for the Daily Sales Report and Z report on your receipt printer.

Where can I see past register sessions?

In the web back office, open the Register Report. It lists every session with the user, open and close times, location, card slips, cheques, cash and status. Open a session to see its totals by payment method and the closing note.

Can I stop cashiers from seeing register totals?

Yes. Role permissions include Cash Register view and close rights. Give cashiers what they need to run their own shift, and keep viewing other sessions or the register report for managers. Set this in the back office under Roles, then assign the role to each user.

What should a cash float be?

Choose an amount that covers change for your first few sales, often $100 to $300 in small notes and coins, and keep it the same every shift. A fixed float makes opening faster and differences easier to spot when you close.
