Weighing scales for SeroPOS

Selling cheese, produce, meat or bulk candy by the kilo means the till needs the weight, not a guess. SeroPOS reads it from a scale connected over USB, serial or the network, and drops it into the cart line for any product sold by weight.

Weighing scales in SeroPOS

USB and serial scales

Connect a USB scale or a serial (RS-232) scale, and pick it from the Detected scales list.

Network scales

Add a scale on the network by IP address and port, bound to one till.

Live reading panel

The scale screen shows the current weight so you can check the connection before you sell.

Decimal quantities

Weighed items go into the cart with a decimal quantity, priced by your unit price.

Keypad backup

If no scale is connected, the till asks you to enter the weight on a keypad instead.

Windows, Mac, Android

Scales work on Windows and Mac over USB or serial, and on Android over USB OTG.

Turning on sell-by-weight

Weighing is switched on per business, and the products you sell by weight are marked with Enable Weight in the product form. Once weighing is on, an Add Weighing Scale row appears in the SeroPOS side drawer. It stays hidden for businesses that never weigh anything, so a café's staff do not see a screen they will never use.

Set up the product with its price per unit, such as per kilogram or per pound, using the units you sell in. When a cashier adds that product to the cart, SeroPOS reads the weight from the connected scale and sets the line quantity, with decimals, so a 0.735 kg wedge of cheese is priced exactly.

Connecting the scale

Open Add Weighing Scale from the side drawer. The screen asks you to connect a scale over USB or RS-232, then lists Detected scales: USB scales, and serial scales on a COM port with the baud rate and 8-N-1 settings. Tap Connect beside yours and watch the live reading panel. Put a known weight on the platter to check it. Scan again if the scale was plugged in after the screen opened.

For scales on the network, choose Add a network scale and enter the IP address and port. Serial scales are often put on the network through a serial-to-Ethernet converter, and the screen suggests common ports such as 4001, 10001 and 8000. A network scale is bound to one till, so each counter weighs on its own scale.

  • USB scales, including HID postal-style scales
  • Serial RS-232 scales on a COM port
  • Network scales by IP address and port
  • A unit option for serial scales that send no unit

Scale protocols the app understands

Scales talk in a few common ways, and SeroPOS handles the main ones. USB scales that identify as HID POS scales are read directly. For serial scales, the app understands CAS and Aclas style output, the Mettler Toledo MT-SICS command set, and scales that stream a continuous reading. If your serial scale sends a number without a unit, set the unit in the scale screen.

The drivers differ by platform. Windows reads HID and serial scales. macOS reads HID and serial scales too. Android reads scales over USB OTG. There is no scale support on iPad or iPhone, so a deli counter that weighs should run SeroPOS on a Windows PC, a Mac or an Android tablet.

When there is no scale

Not every weighed sale happens at a counter with a scale. If none is connected, SeroPOS opens a keypad and asks for the weight of the item, and the manual keypad is always available even when a scale is set up. That covers a farmers' market stand weighing on a hanging scale, or a second till without its own platter.

The rest of the sale works as normal, and a weighed line can be held, discounted and paid like any other line. Weighed items show on the receipt with their quantity, and they appear in the Daily Sales Report's item and category sales like any other product, so you can see how many kilograms of each item you sold.

Frequently asked questions

Which scales work with SeroPOS?

SeroPOS reads USB HID scales, serial RS-232 scales that use CAS or Aclas style output, the Mettler Toledo MT-SICS protocol or continuous output, and network scales by IP address and port. Connect the scale in Add Weighing Scale and check the live reading before selling. The weight keypad is always there as a backup.

Can I use a scale with SeroPOS on an iPad?

No. The iPad and iPhone apps do not support scales. To weigh at the till, run SeroPOS on a Windows PC or Mac, which read USB and serial scales, or on an Android tablet with a USB OTG connection. On iPad, staff can type the weight on the keypad.

Why can't I see Add Weighing Scale in the menu?

The row is hidden until weighing is enabled for your business. Turn on weighing, mark the products you sell by weight with Enable Weight, and sync the till. The Add Weighing Scale row then appears in the side drawer, ready to connect your scale.

Can I connect a serial scale over the network?

Yes. Put the serial scale on a serial-to-Ethernet converter, then choose Add a network scale and enter the converter's IP address and port. Common ports are 4001, 10001 and 8000. Each network scale is bound to one till, so two counters each use their own scale.

What happens if the scale is disconnected mid-shift?

The till falls back to the keypad and asks you to enter the weight of the item, so the sale can carry on. Reconnect the scale from Add Weighing Scale, tap Scan again if needed, and check the live reading before the next weighed sale.
