What is an end-of-day close?

End-of-day close is the routine of counting the drawer, closing the register, settling the card batch and checking the day's report before you lock up.

Every business that takes cash and cards needs a closing routine. The goal is simple: prove that what the POS says you sold matches the money you actually have, and catch any gap while the people who worked the shift are still there. The steps are usually done in the same order every night, by the same role, so nothing gets skipped.

A typical close goes like this. Finish or hold any open orders. Count the cash drawer and take out the float for tomorrow. Record any pay-outs that have not been entered. Close the register shift in the POS with the counted amount. Close the card batch on the terminal so the day's card sales are sent for settlement. Then print or save the end-of-day report and compare it with the cash count and the batch total.

Restaurants add a few steps: clear finished tickets from the kitchen screen, check that no tables are left open, and settle tips with staff. Retailers often add a quick count of high-theft items. Whatever you add, write it down as a checklist so a new manager can close the same way.

In SeroPOS the pieces are in the app's side drawer. Open/Close Register opens a shift with the cash float and closes it with the counted total. DSR (Daily Sale Report) prints the Z report. Card batches close from the terminal menu, for example 'Close Batch & Print Day-End Report' for Global Payments. The back office Register Report keeps the history of every shift, and the daily sales report can be emailed each night at the location's day-end time.

Example

At 10:15 pm the closing manager holds the last open tab, counts $1,046.50 in the drawer, puts $200.00 aside as tomorrow's float and closes the register shift. She closes the card batch on the terminal ($3,880.25), prints the DSR, and sees cash due of $846.50 and card of $3,880.25. Both match, so she signs the sheet and locks up.
