POS system for Nunavut businesses

Nunavut has no territorial sales tax, so a SeroPOS till there charges GST at 5% and little else. What matters more in Iqaluit and the smaller communities is a till that sells offline and catches up when the connection comes back.

What you get

Nunavut in SeroPOS

GST at 5%

Nunavut has no territorial sales tax, so one GST rate set as the default covers most sales.

0% for zero-rated items

Basic groceries and other zero-rated items take a 0% rate, shown clearly on receipts.

Sells offline

Each sale is saved on the device first and uploaded when the connection returns, retrying in the background.

Nothing gets dropped

A sale that can't upload is parked and kept on the till until it can be sent, never discarded.

Card terminals

Interac debit, tap and credit on Moneris Go or Global Payments terminals, with the amount sent from the till.

GST for your return

The Tax Report shows GST on sales against GST on purchases and expenses for your filing period.

Nunavut sales tax at a glance

Businesses in Nunavut charge GST at 5%, registered and filed with the Canada Revenue Agency. There is no territorial sales tax, so one rate covers most taxable sales in Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, Cambridge Bay and across the territory. Your GST number can print on every receipt.

Basic groceries are zero-rated, which affects most stores, since groceries make up a large part of what they sell. Some services are exempt. Restaurant meals and most retail goods are taxable at 5%. Confirm the current rate and the rules for your products with the CRA as of 2026.

Setting up GST in SeroPOS

In the back office go to Settings, then Tax Rates, and add GST at 5%. Add a 0% rate for zero-rated and exempt items, with a clear name such as "Zero-rated". In the SeroPOS app the same list is under Admin, then Taxes, where you can make GST the default so every new product starts with it.

No tax group is needed. Assign GST or 0% to each product as you add it, or fill the tax column in a spreadsheet and import the whole catalogue. Products priced tax-in can be marked "price includes tax". Your GST registration number can print in the receipt header from the app's Edit Restaurant screen.

  • GST 5%: the default for taxable sales
  • 0%: zero-rated groceries and exempt items

Selling when the connection drops

Internet in Nunavut can slow down or drop for hours. The SeroPOS app doesn't wait for it. Each sale is saved on the device with its own reference and uploaded every few seconds in the background, backing off when the line is down. An indicator on the till shows whether it is online.

After repeated failures a sale is parked on the device and kept, never thrown away, until it can be sent. Kitchen tickets and receipts print from local printers while offline. A few screens need the internet, such as the Daily Sales Report and Recent Transactions, and Sync DataBase in the drawer forces a full sync once you are back.

Keeping cash and card totals honest

When connections are slow, it helps to know the day's numbers add up before you leave. Open the cash register at the start of a shift with the float, and close it at the end by entering the counted cash. The register report then shows card, cash and other totals against what was counted.

For card payments, the till's terminal menu prints a batch summary and closes the batch, and Check on Terminal reads the batch if you are unsure whether a card went through. A duplicate-charge guard warns before the same card is charged the same amount twice, which helps when a slow terminal makes staff try again.

Interac and credit on Moneris or Global Payments

SeroPOS sends the amount straight to a Moneris or Global Payments terminal, so nobody keys the total twice. With Moneris Go you enter the merchant ID, store ID, API token and terminal ID in Moneris Pay Settings, and the till reads the terminal's own setup from Moneris, including tip prompts, Interac debit options and whether refunds are allowed.

On Global Payments you can use Global Pay Cloud, bound to each till by the terminal's device reference, or install SeroPOS on the T650P handheld and take orders and payment on one device. A tip entered on either terminal comes back to the till and prints on the receipt as Tip / Gratuity, and batch close runs from the till's terminal menu.

Already have a merchant account? Keep it if your processor is supported. If you want to compare costs, send us a recent statement and we'll quote a rate. Card processing is arranged separately from your SeroPOS plan. Tell us your monthly card volume and the terminals you use today, and we can say which setup fits your counter before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a sales tax in Nunavut besides GST?

No. As of 2026 Nunavut has no territorial sales tax, so most sales carry only the 5% federal GST, filed with the Canada Revenue Agency. Zero-rated items such as basic groceries are taxed at 0%. Confirm the rules for your products with the CRA before you set up.

Does SeroPOS work without internet?

Yes, for selling. Sales are saved on the device and uploaded when the connection returns, and kitchen tickets and receipts still print. Card payments need the terminal to reach its processor, and some reports need the internet. Check the Daily Sales Report once you are back online.

What happens to card payments when the connection is slow?

If a card is approved but the sale doesn't save, SeroPOS keeps the approval in an outbox and records it again. A duplicate-charge guard warns before the same card is charged twice, and Check on Terminal reads the batch to confirm. The terminal itself still needs a connection to approve a payment.

Are these Nunavut tax rates current?

The rates on this page are the well-known public rates as of 2026. Rates and exemptions change, so confirm them with the Canada Revenue Agency before you open, and again whenever a budget is announced. In SeroPOS a rate is stored once and reused by every product and group, so a change is a single edit.

How much does SeroPOS cost in Canada?

Standard is $30 a month and Pro is $50 a month, with a 14-day free trial and no card needed. Standard covers the full POS for one location and three users. Pro adds the floor plan designer, multi-till, CRM, recipes, advanced reports, QuickBooks and WooCommerce.
