POS system for Manitoba businesses
In Manitoba the provincial tax is called RST, retail sales tax, and it sits on top of the federal GST. SeroPOS stores GST and RST as two rates in one tax group, so each sale is taxed once and your returns can be filed from the reports.
Manitoba in SeroPOS
GST + RST tax group
Add GST 5% and RST 7% as rates and combine them into one group for taxable products.
Name it RST
Tax names are yours to set, so receipts and reports say RST, the term Manitoba customers and accountants expect.
RST-exempt items
Give RST-exempt products GST only, and zero-rated groceries a 0% rate.
Interac on your terminal
Debit, tap and credit on Moneris Go or Global Payments terminals, with the amount sent from the till.
Tax collected by period
The Tax Report shows tax on sales, purchases and expenses for any date range and location.
QuickBooks Canada
On Pro, sales post to QuickBooks with GST and RST mapped to matching tax codes.
Manitoba sales tax at a glance
Manitoba businesses charge GST at 5%, filed with the Canada Revenue Agency, and retail sales tax (RST) at 7%, filed with Manitoba Finance. They are separate taxes with separate returns, so you need to see how much of each you collected, not just one tax total.
RST applies to most goods and to a list of services. Some items are exempt, for example basic groceries and children's clothing and footwear within set limits, and some have their own rules. The province publishes bulletins by industry. Read the one for your trade and confirm the current rate as of 2026 with Manitoba Finance before you build your product list.
Setting up GST and RST in SeroPOS
In the back office open Settings, then Tax Rates. Add GST at 5% and a rate called RST at 7%, and tick "for tax group only" on RST. Then go to Tax Groups and create a group, for example "GST + RST", made of both. In the SeroPOS app the same setup is under Admin, then Taxes, with a default tax you can choose.
Use the group for taxable products, GST on its own for RST-exempt items, and a 0% rate for zero-rated goods. In the Tax tab of Business Settings you can enter your GST number and Manitoba tax number, and in the app's Edit Restaurant screen the tax label and number print in the receipt header.
- GST 5%: federal
- RST 7%: provincial, "for tax group only"
- GST + RST group for taxable goods
- GST only for RST-exempt items
- 0% for zero-rated groceries
Clothing, food and other exempt items
Exemptions are where a Manitoba till most often goes wrong. A children's clothing store, a grocer or a pharmacy may sell items on three different tax setups in one basket. In SeroPOS the tax is part of each product, so the cashier never chooses, and the receipt shows exactly which tax applied.
Where an exemption depends on a price limit, keep those items on their own product records with the right tax and check them when the province changes the rules. The back office product list filters by tax, and bulk edit changes the tax on a selection of products at once, which saves time when an exemption changes.
Interac and credit on Moneris or Global Payments
SeroPOS sends the amount straight to a Moneris or Global Payments terminal, so nobody keys the total twice. With Moneris Go you enter the merchant ID, store ID, API token and terminal ID in Moneris Pay Settings, and the till reads the terminal's own setup from Moneris, including tip prompts, Interac debit options and whether refunds are allowed.
On Global Payments you can use Global Pay Cloud, bound to each till by the terminal's device reference, or install SeroPOS on the T650P handheld and take orders and payment on one device. A tip entered on either terminal comes back to the till and prints on the receipt as Tip / Gratuity, and batch close runs from the till's terminal menu.
Already have a merchant account? Keep it if your processor is supported. If you want to compare costs, send us a recent statement and we'll quote a rate. Card processing is arranged separately from your SeroPOS plan. Tell us your monthly card volume and the terminals you use today, and we can say which setup fits your counter before you commit.
Tax reports and QuickBooks Canada
The Tax Report in the back office shows output tax on sales, input tax on purchases and tax on expenses, with an overall figure and the invoices behind each number, filtered by location and date range. The Daily Sales Report adds a tax summary for remittance, and it can be downloaded as a PDF or emailed at day end.
On the Pro plan SeroPOS sends sales, payments, customers and items to QuickBooks. QuickBooks Desktop, Canadian edition 2021 or later (Pro, Premier or Enterprise on Windows), connects through the Web Connector, and SeroPOS can build the GST and RST tax items, groups and codes there for you, matched by rate rather than by name. QuickBooks Online for Canadian companies is supported too, with each SeroPOS rate mapped to a QuickBooks tax code.
Frequently asked questions
What is RST in Manitoba?
RST is Manitoba's retail sales tax, the provincial sales tax charged alongside the 5% federal GST. As of 2026 the general RST rate is 7%. It is filed with Manitoba Finance, separately from your GST return to the CRA, so your POS should keep the two apart.
Can SeroPOS show RST instead of PST on receipts?
Yes. You name each tax rate yourself, so call it RST and that name appears on receipts and in the tax report. Your Manitoba tax number can also print in the receipt header from the app's Edit Restaurant screen or the back office Tax settings.
How do I charge GST only on some items?
Create GST 5% as a rate on its own and assign it to the RST-exempt products. Taxable products use the GST plus RST group. Because tax is set on each product, a basket with both kinds is taxed line by line without the cashier doing anything.
Are these Manitoba tax rates current?
The rates on this page are the well-known public rates as of 2026. Rates and exemptions change, so confirm them with the Canada Revenue Agency and Manitoba Finance before you open, and again whenever a budget is announced. In SeroPOS a rate is stored once and reused by every product and group, so a change is a single edit.
How much does SeroPOS cost in Canada?
Standard is $30 a month and Pro is $50 a month, with a 14-day free trial and no card needed. Standard covers the full POS for one location and three users. Pro adds the floor plan designer, multi-till, CRM, recipes, advanced reports, QuickBooks and WooCommerce.
