POS system for Prince Edward Island businesses
Prince Edward Island uses one harmonized sales tax, so most PEI businesses need a single HST rate and a 0% rate for zero-rated items. This page walks through that setup in SeroPOS and where to find HST for your return.
Prince Edward Island in SeroPOS
HST at 15%
Add HST at 15% once and make it the default tax, so every new product starts with the right rate.
0% for zero-rated items
Basic groceries and other zero-rated items take a 0% rate, shown clearly on receipts and reports.
HST number on receipts
Your HST registration number prints in the receipt header, set from Edit Restaurant in the app or Business Settings.
Change a rate once
Every product and report uses the same rate record, so a new provincial rate is one edit, not a catalogue rebuild.
Interac and tap
Take debit, tap and credit on Moneris Go or Global Payments terminals with the amount sent from the till.
HST collected by period
The Tax Report shows HST on sales, purchases and expenses for your filing period, by location.
Prince Edward Island sales tax at a glance
PEI charges HST at 15%, made up of 5% federal and 10% provincial. It is one tax, registered and filed with the Canada Revenue Agency, so Charlottetown and Summerside businesses don't track a separate provincial tax. One rate covers most sales, including restaurant meals and most retail goods.
Basic groceries are zero-rated, and PEI rebates the provincial part of HST on a short list of items, such as children's clothing and footwear and some books, so they are charged 5%. The rules have conditions, so check the CRA guidance for your products and confirm the current rate as of 2026 before you set up.
Setting up HST in SeroPOS
In the back office go to Settings, then Tax Rates, and add HST at 15%. Add a 0% rate for zero-rated and exempt items, and give it a clear name such as "Zero-rated". In the SeroPOS app the same list is under Admin, then Taxes, where you can set HST as the default so new products pick it up.
Because HST is a single tax, you don't need a tax group. Assign HST or 0% to each product, or fill the tax column in a spreadsheet and import the catalogue in one go. Products priced tax-in can be marked "price includes tax", and SeroPOS works the HST back out on the receipt and in reports.
- HST 15%: most taxable sales
- 0%: zero-rated groceries and exempt items
- HST rebated 5%: items that qualify for PEI's provincial rebate
Seasonal businesses
Many Island businesses run hard from June to September and quietly the rest of the year. SeroPOS plans are monthly, and extra users can be added for the season. You can deactivate products you only sell in summer from the back office product list, so the till stays clean, and activate them again next year with their tax already set.
If you take your till to markets or events, the app keeps selling when the connection drops and uploads the sales when it comes back. Kitchen tickets still print offline. Card terminals need their own connection, so check yours before an outdoor event, and run the Daily Sales Report afterwards to confirm everything arrived.
Taking Interac, Visa and Mastercard
The cashier picks Debit or Credit on the payment screen and SeroPOS hands the amount to the terminal. Moneris Go is set up in Moneris Pay Settings with your merchant, store and terminal IDs. Global Payments connects through Global Pay Cloud by binding the terminal's device reference to the till, or by running SeroPOS directly on a T650P with Terminal Plus.
A tip typed on the terminal comes back and prints as Tip / Gratuity. If a card is approved but the sale doesn't save, SeroPOS keeps the approval in an outbox and records it again, and a duplicate-charge guard warns before the same card is charged the same amount twice. Check on Terminal reads the batch when you're not sure.
Already have a merchant account? Keep it if your processor is supported. If you want to compare costs, send us a recent statement and we'll quote a rate. Card processing is arranged separately from your SeroPOS plan. Tell us your monthly card volume and the terminals you use today, and we can say which setup fits your counter before you commit.
Tax reports and QuickBooks Canada
The Tax Report in the back office shows output tax on sales, input tax on purchases and tax on expenses, with an overall figure and the invoices behind each number, filtered by location and date range. The Daily Sales Report adds a tax summary for remittance, and it can be downloaded as a PDF or emailed at day end.
On the Pro plan SeroPOS sends sales, payments, customers and items to QuickBooks. QuickBooks Desktop, Canadian edition 2021 or later (Pro, Premier or Enterprise on Windows), connects through the Web Connector, and SeroPOS can build the HST tax items, groups and codes there for you, matched by rate rather than by name. QuickBooks Online for Canadian companies is supported too, with each SeroPOS rate mapped to a QuickBooks tax code.
Frequently asked questions
What is the HST rate in PEI?
As of 2026 PEI HST is 15%: 5% federal and 10% provincial, filed together with the Canada Revenue Agency. Basic groceries are zero-rated, and some items qualify for a rebate of the provincial part. Confirm the current rate with the CRA before you set up your POS.
Do I need a tax group for HST?
No. HST combines the federal and provincial parts into one tax filed with the Canada Revenue Agency, so one 15% rate covers most products. Add a 0% rate for zero-rated items, and a separate rate only if some products qualify for a provincial rebate.
Can I use SeroPOS for a seasonal business in PEI?
Yes. Plans are monthly with a 14-day free trial, so you can start before the season. Products you only sell in summer can be deactivated over the winter and turned back on later with their tax and prices intact. Offline selling helps at markets and events with weak internet.
Are these PEI tax rates current?
The rates on this page are the well-known public rates as of 2026. Rates and exemptions change, so confirm them with the Canada Revenue Agency before you open, and again whenever a budget is announced. In SeroPOS a rate is stored once and reused by every product and group, so a change is a single edit.
How much does SeroPOS cost in Canada?
Standard is $30 a month and Pro is $50 a month, with a 14-day free trial and no card needed. Standard covers the full POS for one location and three users. Pro adds the floor plan designer, multi-till, CRM, recipes, advanced reports, QuickBooks and WooCommerce.
