POS system for Michigan businesses
Michigan is one of the simpler states for sales tax: one 6% statewide rate with no local add-ons. In SeroPOS that means a single rate as your default, a 0% rate for exempt items, and a card terminal.
Michigan in SeroPOS
One 6% rate
Add the 6% rate once and make it the default, so every new product is taxed the same way in Detroit or Grand Rapids.
No tax group needed
Michigan has no local sales taxes, so you don't need to build a group of state and local parts.
Exempt food at 0%
Food for home consumption is exempt, so it takes a 0% rate, while prepared food stays at 6%.
Prices with or without tax
Each product has a "price includes tax" setting, so tax-in pricing at a bar or event works without manual maths.
Global Payments or Gravity
Take card and tap payments on terminals that get the amount straight from the till, with tips coming back to the receipt.
Tax collected by period
The Tax Report shows tax on sales, purchases and expenses for any date range and location, with the invoices behind it.
Michigan sales tax at a glance
Michigan's sales tax rate is 6% as of 2026, administered by the Michigan Department of Treasury. There are no county or city sales taxes, so the same rate applies whether your business is in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing or the Upper Peninsula. That makes the setup quicker than in states that stack local rates.
Food for home consumption is generally exempt, while prepared food, restaurant meals, soft drinks and most other goods are taxable at 6%. Michigan also has a use tax at the same rate. Confirm the current rate and your product rules with the Department of Treasury before you open.
Setting up Michigan sales tax in SeroPOS
In the back office go to Settings, then Tax Rates, and add Michigan sales tax at 6%. Add a 0% rate for exempt items with a clear name, such as "Exempt food". In the SeroPOS app the same list is under Admin, then Taxes, where you can make the 6% rate the default so new products pick it up.
Assign the rate to each product as you add it, or fill the tax column in a spreadsheet and import your catalogue in one go. Products priced tax-in can be marked "price includes tax", and SeroPOS works the tax back out on the receipt and in reports. Your sales tax licence number can print in the receipt header.

- 0%: food for home consumption and other exempt items
Grocers, delis and party stores
A Michigan party store or deli sells exempt grocery food alongside taxable prepared sandwiches, soft drinks and beer. In SeroPOS the tax is part of each product, so the cashier scans and each line is taxed correctly. A USB barcode scanner types straight into the search field, and the device camera can scan when you don't have one.
If you sell by weight at a deli counter, a connected scale or a typed weight carries the weight into the sale, and each weighed product keeps its own tax. Before you open, filter the back office product list by tax to check what sits on 0%, and use bulk edit to fix a group of products at once.
Card terminals that talk to the till
In Michigan, as almost everywhere, most customers pay by card or tap, so the terminal matters as much as the till. SeroPOS works with Global Payments, through Global Pay Cloud or on the T650P handheld with Terminal Plus, and with Gravity Payments terminals set up in Gravity Pay Settings.
Each till can have its own terminal, set under Card Terminal for This Till, so the front counter and the bar charge on separate devices. Tips typed on the terminal print on the receipt, Close Batch prints a day-end summary, and Check on Terminal reads the batch when you're not sure whether a card went through.
Already have a merchant account? Keep it if your processor is supported. If you want to compare costs, send us a recent statement and we'll quote a rate. Card processing is arranged separately from your SeroPOS plan. Tell us your monthly card volume and the terminals you use today, and we can say which setup fits your counter before you commit.
Tax reports and QuickBooks Desktop
The Tax Report in the back office shows tax collected on sales, tax paid on purchases and tax on expenses, with an overall figure and the invoices behind each number, filtered by location and date range. Run it for your filing period, and use the Product Taxes section of the daily sales summary to see which products the tax came from.
On the Pro plan SeroPOS sends sales, payments, customers and items to QuickBooks Desktop, US edition 2021 or later (Pro, Premier or Enterprise on Windows), through the Web Connector. It can build your sales tax items, groups and tax agency in QuickBooks for you, matched by rate rather than by name. The QuickBooks Online connection is set up for Canadian companies today.
Frequently asked questions
What is the sales tax rate in Michigan?
As of 2026 Michigan's sales tax rate is 6%, and there are no local sales taxes, so the same rate applies across the state. Food for home consumption is generally exempt. Confirm the current rate with the Michigan Department of Treasury before setting up your POS.
Do I need a tax group in Michigan?
No. With one statewide rate and no local add-ons, a single 6% rate set as the default covers most products. Add a 0% rate for exempt items such as food for home consumption. Tax groups are for states that stack state and local rates.
Is food taxed in Michigan?
Food for home consumption is generally exempt from Michigan sales tax, while prepared food, restaurant meals and soft drinks are taxable at 6%. Set exempt grocery items to a 0% rate in SeroPOS and everything else to 6%, and check the Department of Treasury's guidance for borderline items.
Are these Michigan sales tax rates current?
The rates on this page are well-known public rates as of 2026. State and local rates change, often at the start of a quarter, so confirm the rate for your exact address with the Michigan Department of Treasury before you open. In SeroPOS each rate is stored once, so a change is a single edit.
