POS system for New Brunswick businesses
New Brunswick charges one harmonized sales tax, so a till there needs one main rate and a 0% rate for zero-rated items. Here is how to set that up in SeroPOS and get HST figures out for your return.
New Brunswick in SeroPOS
HST at 15%
Add HST at 15% once and make it the default tax, so every new product starts with the right rate.
0% for zero-rated items
Basic groceries and other zero-rated items take a 0% rate, shown clearly on receipts and reports.
HST number on receipts
Your HST registration number prints in the receipt header, set from Edit Restaurant in the app or Business Settings.
Change a rate once
Every product and report uses the same rate record, so a new provincial rate is one edit, not a catalogue rebuild.
Interac and tap
Take debit, tap and credit on Moneris Go or Global Payments terminals with the amount sent from the till.
HST collected by period
The Tax Report shows HST on sales, purchases and expenses for your filing period, by location.
New Brunswick sales tax at a glance
New Brunswick uses HST at 15%, made up of the 5% federal part and a 10% provincial part. It is a single tax, registered and filed with the Canada Revenue Agency, so there is no separate provincial return to track. One rate covers most taxable sales in Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John and across the province.
Basic groceries, prescription drugs and some medical devices are zero-rated, and some services are exempt. Restaurant meals, snack foods and most retail goods are taxable at the full rate. Confirm the current rate and the rules for your products with the CRA as of 2026 before you build your product list.
Setting up HST in SeroPOS
In the back office go to Settings, then Tax Rates, and add HST at 15%. Add a 0% rate for zero-rated and exempt items, and give it a clear name such as "Zero-rated". In the SeroPOS app the same list is under Admin, then Taxes, where you can set HST as the default so new products pick it up.
Because HST is a single tax, you don't need a tax group. Assign HST or 0% to each product, or fill the tax column in a spreadsheet and import the catalogue in one go. Products priced tax-in can be marked "price includes tax", and SeroPOS works the HST back out on the receipt and in reports.
- HST 15%: most taxable sales
- 0%: zero-rated groceries and exempt items
- Optional: a separate rate for any item with a special rule
Mixed baskets in grocery and convenience
A corner store or grocer often rings up taxable and zero-rated items together: bread and milk at 0%, pop and chips at 15%. In SeroPOS the tax is part of each product, so the cashier scans and the till taxes each line. The receipt shows the taxable subtotal, and the Daily Sales Report's Product Taxes section shows which products the HST came from.
Before you open, filter the back office product list by tax to check what sits on 0%. Bulk edit changes the tax on a selection of products at once, which is quicker than opening them one by one. If you sell by weight, each weighed item, read from a connected scale or typed on the keypad, keeps its own tax.
Interac and credit on Moneris or Global Payments
SeroPOS sends the amount straight to a Moneris or Global Payments terminal, so nobody keys the total twice. With Moneris Go you enter the merchant ID, store ID, API token and terminal ID in Moneris Pay Settings, and the till reads the terminal's own setup from Moneris, including tip prompts, Interac debit options and whether refunds are allowed.
On Global Payments you can use Global Pay Cloud, bound to each till by the terminal's device reference, or install SeroPOS on the T650P handheld and take orders and payment on one device. A tip entered on either terminal comes back to the till and prints on the receipt as Tip / Gratuity, and batch close runs from the till's terminal menu.
Already have a merchant account? Keep it if your processor is supported. If you want to compare costs, send us a recent statement and we'll quote a rate. Card processing is arranged separately from your SeroPOS plan. Tell us your monthly card volume and the terminals you use today, and we can say which setup fits your counter before you commit.
Tax reports and QuickBooks Canada
The Tax Report in the back office shows output tax on sales, input tax on purchases and tax on expenses, with an overall figure and the invoices behind each number, filtered by location and date range. The Daily Sales Report adds a tax summary for remittance, and it can be downloaded as a PDF or emailed at day end.
On the Pro plan SeroPOS sends sales, payments, customers and items to QuickBooks. QuickBooks Desktop, Canadian edition 2021 or later (Pro, Premier or Enterprise on Windows), connects through the Web Connector, and SeroPOS can build the HST tax items, groups and codes there for you, matched by rate rather than by name. QuickBooks Online for Canadian companies is supported too, with each SeroPOS rate mapped to a QuickBooks tax code.
Frequently asked questions
What is the HST rate in New Brunswick?
As of 2026 New Brunswick HST is 15%: 5% federal and 10% provincial, filed together with the Canada Revenue Agency. Basic groceries are zero-rated. Rates can change in a federal or provincial budget, so confirm the current rate with the CRA before you set up your POS.
Do I need a tax group for HST?
No. HST combines the federal and provincial parts into one tax filed with the Canada Revenue Agency, so one 15% rate covers most products. Add a 0% rate for zero-rated items, and a separate rate only if some products qualify for a provincial rebate.
Can I use SeroPOS on a Global Payments terminal in New Brunswick?
Yes. SeroPOS can run directly on the Global Payments T650P handheld through Terminal Plus, so one device takes the order and the card. You can also use Global Pay Cloud with a separate till, or a Moneris Go terminal. Card processing is arranged with the processor separately from your plan.
Are these New Brunswick tax rates current?
The rates on this page are the well-known public rates as of 2026. Rates and exemptions change, so confirm them with the Canada Revenue Agency before you open, and again whenever a budget is announced. In SeroPOS a rate is stored once and reused by every product and group, so a change is a single edit.
How much does SeroPOS cost in Canada?
Standard is $30 a month and Pro is $50 a month, with a 14-day free trial and no card needed. Standard covers the full POS for one location and three users. Pro adds the floor plan designer, multi-till, CRM, recipes, advanced reports, QuickBooks and WooCommerce.
