POS system for Saskatchewan businesses

Saskatchewan businesses collect GST for Ottawa and PST for the province, at different rates and on different product lists. SeroPOS keeps them as two rates inside one tax group, so the till applies both and your reports keep them apart.

Saskatchewan sales tax at a glance

Most sales in Saskatchewan carry GST at 5%, filed with the Canada Revenue Agency, and PST at 6%, filed with the province's Ministry of Finance. The two are registered and remitted separately, so your POS has to track them separately even though the customer pays one total.

Saskatchewan PST applies to many goods and a wide range of services, and restaurant meals are taxable. Alcohol is taxed differently, through a provincial liquor consumption tax rather than the 6% PST. Some items, such as basic groceries and children's clothing, are exempt. Check the province's PST bulletins for your products, and confirm current rates as of 2026 before you set anything up.

Setting up GST and PST in SeroPOS

In the back office go to Settings, then Tax Rates, and add GST at 5% and PST at 6%. Tick "for tax group only" on PST. Then open Tax Groups and create a group, for example "SK TAX", from the two. The same screens are in the SeroPOS app under Admin, then Taxes, where you can also pick a default tax.

Assign "SK TAX" to taxable products and GST on its own to PST-exempt items. Add a 0% rate for zero-rated goods. If you sell alcohol, add the liquor consumption tax as its own rate and group it with GST, so drinks show the right tax on the bill. Products can be priced tax-in with the "price includes tax" setting.

  • GST 5% and PST 6% as rates
  • SK TAX group for taxable goods and services
  • GST only for PST-exempt items
  • A separate group for alcohol
  • 0% for zero-rated items

Getting the product list right

Most tax mistakes at a till come from a product set up with the wrong rate. In SeroPOS the tax is part of the product, so it is worth fixing once. The back office product list filters by tax, so you can pull up every item on "GST only" and check it, and bulk edit lets you change the tax on many products at once.

If you are importing a catalogue, fill in the tax column in the spreadsheet before you upload it. After a day of trading, open the Daily Sales Report and look at Product Taxes: an item that should have carried PST but shows only GST stands out quickly, and you can correct the product before the next shift.

Taking Interac, Visa and Mastercard

The cashier picks Debit or Credit on the payment screen and SeroPOS hands the amount to the terminal. Moneris Go is set up in Moneris Pay Settings with your merchant, store and terminal IDs. Global Payments connects through Global Pay Cloud by binding the terminal's device reference to the till, or by running SeroPOS directly on a T650P with Terminal Plus.

A tip typed on the terminal comes back and prints as Tip / Gratuity. If a card is approved but the sale doesn't save, SeroPOS keeps the approval in an outbox and records it again, and a duplicate-charge guard warns before the same card is charged the same amount twice. Check on Terminal reads the batch when you're not sure.

Already have a merchant account? Keep it if your processor is supported. If you want to compare costs, send us a recent statement and we'll quote a rate. Card processing is arranged separately from your SeroPOS plan. Tell us your monthly card volume and the terminals you use today, and we can say which setup fits your counter before you commit.

Tax reports and QuickBooks Canada

The Tax Report in the back office shows output tax on sales, input tax on purchases and tax on expenses, with an overall figure and the invoices behind each number, filtered by location and date range. The Daily Sales Report adds a tax summary for remittance, with GST and PST in their own columns, and it can be downloaded as a PDF or emailed at day end.

On the Pro plan SeroPOS sends sales, payments, customers and items to QuickBooks. QuickBooks Desktop, Canadian edition 2021 or later (Pro, Premier or Enterprise on Windows), connects through the Web Connector, and SeroPOS can build the GST and PST tax items, groups and codes there for you, matched by rate rather than by name. QuickBooks Online for Canadian companies is supported too, with each SeroPOS rate mapped to a QuickBooks tax code.

Frequently asked questions

What is the PST rate in Saskatchewan?

As of 2026 Saskatchewan PST is 6%, charged on top of the 5% federal GST for most taxable sales. Alcohol is taxed through a separate liquor consumption tax. Rates can change in a provincial budget, so confirm the current figure with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Finance before you set up your POS.

How do I set up GST and PST as one tax in SeroPOS?

Add GST 5% and PST 6% under Tax Rates, tick "for tax group only" on PST, then create a tax group that contains both. Assign the group to taxable products. The till charges both, and receipts and reports still show GST and PST separately.

Do restaurant meals pay PST in Saskatchewan?

Restaurant meals are generally subject to Saskatchewan PST as well as GST, as of 2026. Set your food products to the GST plus PST group. Drinks with alcohol need their own group with the liquor tax. Check the details for your menu with the province before you open.

Are these Saskatchewan tax rates current?

The rates on this page are the well-known public rates as of 2026. Rates and exemptions change, so confirm them with the Canada Revenue Agency and Saskatchewan's Ministry of Finance before you open, and again whenever a budget is announced. In SeroPOS a rate is stored once and reused by every product and group, so a change is a single edit.

How much does SeroPOS cost in Canada?

Standard is $30 a month and Pro is $50 a month, with a 14-day free trial and no card needed. Standard covers the full POS for one location and three users. Pro adds the floor plan designer, multi-till, CRM, recipes, advanced reports, QuickBooks and WooCommerce.
