Set a default customer credit limit in SeroPOS

The Contact tab of Business Settings sets a Default credit limit that every new customer starts with. Open Settings › Setting (/business/settings), click Contact, enter the amount and click Update Settings. A customer who reaches their limit can't take more on account until they pay down the balance, and you can still change the limit on any single customer.

Steps

  1. Open the Business Settings page. In the back office sidebar, open Settings and click Setting. This is the Business Settings page at /business/settings, with its tabs down the left and a search box at the top.
  2. Click the Contact tab. Contact is the fifth tab in the list on the left.
  3. Enter the Default credit limit. Type the most a new customer can owe you, for example 500. Leave it blank if you don't want a default limit.
  4. Click Update Settings. Click Update Settings at the bottom of the page. Every tab on this page saves together, so finish any other tab you changed before you click.
  5. Adjust single customers when needed. Open Contacts › Customers and edit a customer to give them a higher or lower Credit Limit than the default.

How the credit limit works at the till

A credit limit only matters when you sell on account, for example with the credit sale button on the POS or by charging a sale to a customer. When a new sale would take the customer past their limit, the sale is stopped until part of the balance is paid.

The default applies to customers you add after you set it. Existing customers keep the limit already on their record, so update them one by one if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does the default credit limit change existing customers?

No. It fills in the credit limit for customers you create from now on. Customers you already have keep the limit on their own record. Edit each existing customer under Contacts › Customers if you want them on the new amount.

How does a customer get back under their limit?

Take a payment against what they owe. You can collect a customer balance from the customer's record or their ledger, and once the amount owing drops below the limit, new sales on account are allowed again.
