Set up variation groups

A variation group is a reusable set of options, such as Size with Small, Medium and Large. Create it once in Admin › Variation Groups by typing a Group name and its values, then use it on any product sold With variations. The price of each value is set on each product, so a large coffee and a large tea can cost different amounts. At the till, staff pick the option when they add the item.

Rename or add values; every product using the group follows.

Steps

  1. Open Variation Groups. Open the drawer, tap Admin, and under Catalog tap Variation Groups.
  2. Add a group. Tap + Add Group and type the Group name, such as Size or Colour.
  3. Add the values. Fill in Value 1, Value 2 and so on, for example Small, Medium, Large. Tap Add value for another row, or the red minus to remove one.
  4. Save. Tap Add (or Save when editing).
  5. Use it on a product. Create a product With variations, choose this Variation group and enter a price for each value.
  6. Sell it. When staff tap the product, Select Variation asks them to choose a size or option. In QSR Mode each variation gets its own button.

Good to know

This screen holds the option names only; prices live on each product. Renaming a value renames it on every product that uses the group, which is useful for fixing a typo but worth checking before you change Small to Regular. Each row in the list shows the group's values and how many products use it.

  • A group can't be deleted while products still use it.
  • Each group needs at least one value.
  • Use modifier groups, not variations, for add-ons such as extra cheese.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between variations and modifiers?

A variation is a version of the item with its own price, such as a Large pizza. A modifier is an add-on chosen on top, such as extra cheese for $1.50. Use Variation Groups for sizes and Modifier Groups for extras.

Why can't I delete a variation group?

Products still use it. Change or remove those products first; the list shows how many products use each group.
