Steps
- Open Taxes. Open the drawer, tap Admin, and under Catalog tap Taxes.
- Add each single rate. Tap + Add Tax, type a Tax name such as GST@5%, enter the Rate (%) and tap Add. Repeat for every rate you charge.
- Create a tax group. Tap + Add Tax again, name it (for example BC TAX), and turn on Tax group (combine rates).
- Pick the rates to combine. Under Combine these rates, tick at least two rates. The Combined rate total updates as you tick. Tap Add.
- Set the default. Tick Default on the tax or group to apply it to every new product by default.
- Assign taxes to products. Open each product and choose its Tax rate. Use Price includes tax if your menu prices already contain tax.
How groups work
A tax group adds several existing rates together, so a product in British Columbia can carry GST 5% and PST 7% as one choice. If you later change a single rate that belongs to a group, the group's combined total is recalculated for you. A group needs at least two single rates to exist first.
- A group shows a layers icon and the label Tax group in the list.
- Every product needs a tax; use a 0% rate for tax-free items.
- Ask your accountant which rates apply to your products.
Frequently asked questions
How do I charge GST and PST on the same item?
Add GST and PST as single rates, then add a tax group that combines them, such as BC TAX = GST 5% + PST 7%. Assign the group to the products that carry both taxes.
What does the Default tax do?
The tax ticked as Default is applied to every new product automatically. You can still choose a different Tax rate on any product.
