Scan barcodes with the camera

If you don't have a barcode scanner, use the phone or tablet camera. On a phone, open the Categories tab and tap Scan Barcode; on a tablet, tap the camera button next to the POS search. Point the camera at the barcode. SeroPOS looks the code up as a SKU on the server and adds the matching product to the cart, so camera scanning needs internet.

Steps

  1. Open the Categories tab. On a phone, tap the Categories tab at the bottom. On a tablet, stay on the POS screen.
  2. Tap Scan Barcode. Tap the Scan Barcode icon. Allow camera access the first time.
  3. Point at the barcode. Hold the barcode inside the frame until it reads. Good light helps.
  4. Check the cart. The matching product is added and Item added to cart appears.
  5. Scan the next item. Tap Scan Barcode again for each item.

Limits

The camera scanner looks the code up online, so it doesn't work while the device is offline. A USB or Bluetooth scanner in the search field is faster for a busy shop and works offline because it matches against the products already on the device.

If the camera doesn't open, check that SeroPOS has camera permission in your device settings.

Frequently asked questions

Why does camera scanning say I'm offline?

Camera scans look up the SKU on the server, so they need internet. Check the online indicator in the app bar. Until you're back online, search by name or use a USB scanner, which matches products stored on the device.

Is the camera good enough for a grocery store?

It's fine for occasional scans, such as a café selling a few packaged items. For steady checkout traffic a dedicated USB or Bluetooth scanner is quicker and more reliable, reads damaged barcodes better, and works without internet.
