Add opening stock to a product

Opening stock is the quantity a product starts with at each location before any purchases. Add it from Products › List Products › Actions › Add or edit opening stock, or by clicking Save & Add Opening Stock when you create the product. For each location, enter the quantity and Unit Cost (Before Tax), plus Exp. Date and Lot Number if you track them, then click Save.

Steps

  1. Find the product. Open Products › List Products and search for the product.
  2. Open opening stock. Click Actions and choose Add or edit opening stock. A table opens with one block per business location.
  3. Enter quantities. For each location, type the quantity on hand.
  4. Enter the cost. Enter the Unit Cost (Before Tax) for that stock. The Subtotal (Before Tax) calculates itself.
  5. Add expiry and lot. If product expiry or lot numbers are on, fill Exp. Date and Lot Number. Add another row for a second lot at the same location.
  6. Save. Click Save. Stock is now available to sell at those locations.

Good to know

Variable products show a row per variation. Opening stock appears in Product stock history and Product Stock Details as its own line. Once some of it is sold, the product can't be deleted, because its history is in use.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use opening stock or a purchase?

Use opening stock for what's on the shelf when you start using SeroPOS. Record new deliveries from suppliers as purchases, so supplier balances, purchase reports and lot details stay correct.

Can I change opening stock later?

Yes. Choose Add or edit opening stock again and change the quantity or cost. For later corrections after sales have started, a stock adjustment keeps a clearer record.
