Run and read the Tax Report

The Tax Report compares the tax you charged with the tax you paid. Go to Reports > Tax Report (/reports/tax-report), choose a Business Location and Date Range. Three figures appear at the top: Input Tax (on purchases), Output Tax (on sales) and Expense Tax (on expenses), with the overall result of Output Tax minus Input Tax minus Expense Tax. Tabs below list each purchase, sale and expense with its tax by rate.

Steps

  1. Open the report. In the sidebar, open Reports and click Tax Report. You need the tax report permission.
  2. Filter it. Choose a Business Location, then click Date Range and pick a preset (Today, Yesterday, Last 7 Days, Last 30 Days, This Month, Last Month, This month last year, This Year, Last Year, Current financial year, Last financial year) or Custom Range.
  3. Read the three totals. Input Tax is tax on purchases from suppliers, Output Tax is tax on your sales, and Expense Tax is tax paid on business expenses.
  4. Read the overall figure. The overall line shows Output Tax - Input Tax - Expense Tax. A positive amount is roughly what you owe for the period; a negative amount means you paid more tax than you collected.
  5. Check the detail tabs. Open Input Tax, Output Tax or Expense Tax. Each row shows the date, reference or invoice number, supplier or customer, tax number, total amount, discount and one column per tax rate.
  6. Export or print. Use the buttons above the table: CSV or Excel downloads the rows you can see, Print opens a print view, Columns hides or shows columns, and PDF saves the table (offered in most back-office languages).

Using it for a GST/HST or sales tax return

The tabs break tax down by each tax rate you set up, so a GST and a PST rate get separate columns. Use the Output Tax total for tax collected and the Input Tax plus Expense Tax totals for tax paid. Check the figures with your accountant before filing; the report shows what was recorded in SeroPOS for the period and location.

The Daily Sales Report has its own Tax Summary (for remittance) for a single location. The Tax Report is the one to use when you also want the tax on purchases and expenses.

Export and print

Every table on this report has the same toolbar: CSV, Excel, Print, Columns and, in most back-office languages, PDF. The exports take the columns that are visible, so hide anything you don't need with Columns first. The totals row at the bottom of the table is included in the export.

Frequently asked questions

Which tab shows tax on my sales?

Output Tax. Its rows are your sales invoices with the customer, invoice number and the tax charged at each rate. Input Tax lists purchases from suppliers, and Expense Tax lists expenses where you entered tax.

Why is a tax rate missing from the columns?

The columns come from the tax rates set up for the business. If a rate was deleted or never set up, sales taxed at it may only appear in the total. Check Settings > Tax Rates, and make sure products and expenses use the right rate.
