Rack, row and position for every product
Record where each product lives in your store or stockroom as a rack, row and position. Staff find stock faster, and new hires stop asking where things are kept.
Storage locations in SeroPOS
Rack, row, position
Three fields describe exactly where a product sits.
Per location
Each business location has its own rack, row and position for the same product.
On the product form
Fill the fields in while adding or editing the product in the back office.
Turn on when needed
Enable racks, row and position in Business Settings › Product; hidden otherwise.
Faster picking
Staff go straight to the shelf for counts, transfers and customer requests.
Fits any layout
Use aisle and bay numbers, shelf letters or bin codes, whatever your store uses.
A place for everything
In a hardware store, a pharmacy back room or a parts counter, the slowest part of a sale can be finding the item. Storage locations in SeroPOS record where each product is kept, using three fields: rack, row and position. Rack might be the aisle or shelving unit, row the shelf level and position the spot along it.
Use whatever scheme your store already has. Aisle 4, shelf C, bin 12 works the same as Rack B, Row 2, Position 7. Keep the format consistent across the whole store, so anyone can read a location the same way, and post a simple map by the stockroom door that shows where each rack sits.
Turning it on
Storage locations are off by default so the product form stays short for businesses that do not need them. Turn on Enable racks, row and position in Business Settings › Product, and the fields appear on the product form for each business location the product is sold at. It takes a minute to switch on.
Because they are per location, a product can live in aisle 2 at the main store and in the back room at a smaller branch, and each store records its own. That suits businesses whose branches have different layouts, such as a flagship with open shelves and a smaller store that keeps most stock behind the counter.
- Business Settings › Product
- Turn on racks, row and position
- Open a product and fill in each location's fields
- Save
Where it helps most
Stock counts go faster when the counter knows where to look, and fewer items are missed because they were stored somewhere unusual. Picking for a stock transfer or a large order is quicker when the list of products comes with somewhere to find them. Training new staff takes less time too.
It also helps at the counter. When a customer asks for a part you do not keep out front, staff can look up the product and go straight to its rack and row instead of searching the stockroom. That keeps the customer waiting for less time. Service feels quicker. Customers notice that.
Keeping it accurate
Storage locations are only useful if they stay current. When you move a product, update its rack, row and position on the product form at the same time. Bulk edit in the back office helps when a whole section is moved. Make it part of the routine. Check during stocktakes.
Pair storage locations with good product names and SKUs, and with barcode labels printed from the back office, so the shelf, the label and the system all agree. Small shops can start with racks only and add rows and positions later, when the range grows and a single rack holds too many items to find quickly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I record where a product is stored?
Turn on Enable racks, row and position in Business Settings › Product. Then open the product in the back office and fill in the rack, row and position for each location that stocks it, and save. The fields then show for every location the product is sold at.
Can the same product have different locations at each store?
Yes. Rack, row and position are recorded per business location, so each store sets where it keeps the product. That suits stores with different layouts, so each one can describe its own shelves. Set each one separately. Each store decides.
Do I have to use all three fields?
No. Use the fields that suit your layout. A small shop might only use rack, while a warehouse-style stockroom uses rack, row and position for an exact spot. Leave any field you do not need blank. Start simple and add detail later.
Why can't I see the rack fields on the product form?
They only show when Enable racks, row and position is turned on in Business Settings › Product. Turn it on and reload the product form. If you still cannot see them, check that you are editing a product that is sold at one or more locations.
Is this useful for restaurants?
Usually less so. Storage locations suit retail, hardware, pharmacy and parts businesses with many products on shelves. Restaurants can leave the setting off to keep the product form simple. Turn it on only if a stockroom has enough products to need it.
