Group customers by type or tier
Put customers into groups such as trade, staff, VIP or wholesale, and give each group its own pricing. Groups then show up in reports, so you can see how much each kind of customer spends and who your best ones are.

Creating customer groups
Customer Groups is under Contacts in the back office. Add a group with a name and choose how its prices are calculated. The first option is a percentage: a plus or minus amount on the normal selling price. A staff group at minus 15% or a trade group at minus 10% takes seconds to set up.
The second option is a selling price group. Link the customer group to a price group such as Wholesale, and its customers pay the prices set for each product in that price group. That is the better choice when discounts differ by product rather than one flat percentage. You can mix both kinds of group in the same business.
- Percentage up or down on selling price
- Or a linked selling price group
Putting customers in groups
Choose the group on the customer's record in the back office, or when adding or editing a customer in the SeroPOS app. Customers can be moved between groups at any time, for example when a regular earns VIP status or a trade account closes. The change applies to their next sale.
When the customer is attached to a sale, their group's pricing applies. Staff do not need to remember who gets what discount, and customers get the same price whichever till or staff member serves them. It also avoids awkward conversations about a discount one person gave and another did not. The price is simply part of the customer's record, wherever they shop.
Discounts for particular groups
Discount rules under Sell, then Discounts, can be limited to customer groups. Set up a rule such as 20% off a brand for members during a promotion, with start and end dates, a priority and the products, brands or categories it covers. Only customers in the chosen groups get it.
That keeps promotions targeted. A members-only weekend sale or a trade-only clearance can run alongside your normal pricing without anyone keying discounts by hand. When the end date passes, the rule simply stops applying, so there is nothing to remember to switch off. Staff see the discount appear on the sale without having to key it themselves, which keeps lines moving at the till.
Seeing how each group performs
The customer groups report under Reports gives total sales per group for any date range and location. It answers questions like how much trade customers spend compared with walk-ins, or whether the VIP group is growing. Use it to decide where special pricing is earning its keep and where it is simply giving margin away.
Other reports filter by group too. The contacts report shows each customer's sales, returns and amount due, filtered by group. The sales payment report filters payments by group, which helps when trade customers pay on account and you want to see what came in from them this month. Groups make those questions quick to answer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I give a group of customers a discount?
Create a customer group with a negative percentage, such as minus 10%, and put the customers in it. When one of them is on a sale, their prices come down by that percentage. For product-by-product pricing, link the group to a selling price group instead.
Can a customer be in more than one group?
Each customer belongs to one customer group at a time. If you need overlapping offers, use discount rules, which can apply to several groups at once, or combine a group with a selling price group. That keeps pricing predictable. Most businesses need only a few.
Do customer groups work at the till?
Yes. Choose the group when adding or editing a customer in the app, and the group's pricing applies when that customer is attached to the sale. The same customer record is used in the back office. Staff do not have to remember who gets what.
Can I report sales by customer group?
Yes. The customer groups report shows total sales per group for the date range and location you choose. The contacts report and sales payment report can also be filtered by customer group. Pick any period you like. Compare groups month by month.
What is the difference between a customer group and a price group?
A selling price group is a set of product prices, such as wholesale prices. A customer group is a set of customers. You can link a customer group to a price group so its customers automatically pay those prices. Both work together.
