Pricing that follows the customer

Regular trade customers expect their price without reminding the cashier. Members expect their discount every visit. Customer group pricing makes that automatic. Each customer can belong to one group, and each group has a price calculation type: a percentage on the selling price, or a selling price group. Staff never key in a discount.

When staff choose the customer on a sale, SeroPOS uses the group's pricing for everything in the cart. Nobody has to remember who gets what. Customers notice when their price is right every time, and you avoid the uneven discounts that creep in when staff apply them from memory on a busy shift.

Two ways to price a group

The percentage type adjusts every product by the same amount. A Members group at minus 10% takes ten percent off the selling price across the board. A positive percentage works as a surcharge, for example for a catering account with higher service costs. It is the simplest to set up.

The selling price group type uses a price list instead. Link the Trade group to your Wholesale price group, and each product sells at its wholesale price. Use this when the discount varies by product, such as thin margins on some lines and generous ones on others. Update the list as costs change.

  • Percentage: plus or minus a percent on selling price
  • Selling price group: each product's price from a price list

Setting it up

Create groups in the back office under Contacts › Customer Groups with a name and a price calculation type. Then assign customers to them. On the back office customer form, choose the Customer Group. In the SeroPOS app, the Add Customer and Edit Customer screens have the same Customer group field, so staff can sign up a member at the counter.

Import Contacts can also bring in customers in bulk from a spreadsheet when you are moving a member list across. Put a group column in the spreadsheet so each customer lands in the right group on import, then check a few records before you open to make sure the pricing applies as you expect.

Discounts and reports

Automatic discount rules have a setting to apply, or not, in customer groups. Use it to decide whether a weekend promotion stacks on top of member pricing. The Customer Groups Report shows total sales per customer group over a date range, and the Contacts report can filter by customer group.

Together they show whether a membership or trade programme is bringing in enough business to justify its prices. Review them every few months and adjust the percentage or price list if a group is costing more than it brings in. Small changes add up over a year. Keep the numbers honest.

Frequently asked questions

How do I give a group of customers a discount?

Create a customer group under Contacts › Customer Groups, choose the Percentage price calculation type and enter the discount, such as minus 10. Assign customers to the group. When they are selected on a sale, the discount applies automatically. Staff do nothing extra.

Can a customer group use wholesale prices?

Yes. Set the group's price calculation type to a selling price group, such as Wholesale. Customers in the group then get that price list's price on each product. Use this when discounts vary by product. Prices come from the list.

Can I set a customer's group from the POS?

Yes. The Add Customer and Edit Customer screens in the SeroPOS app include a Customer group field, so staff can put a new member or trade customer in the right group at the counter. The group then applies on their next sale.

Do automatic discounts stack with group pricing?

You decide. Each automatic discount rule has a setting for whether it applies in customer groups. Turn it off to stop a promotion stacking on member prices. Set it per rule, so some promotions can stack and others cannot. You stay in control.

Can I see sales by customer group?

Yes. The Customer Groups Report in the back office shows total sales per customer group for a date range, and the Contacts report can be filtered by group. Use it to judge whether each group is worth its pricing. Compare periods side by side.
