Discounts by the line or the whole order
Take a few dollars off a scuffed item, give a regular 10 percent off their order, or run a staff discount, with role permissions deciding who can discount and by how much.
Discounts in SeroPOS
Line discounts
Tap a cart line and apply a percentage or fixed discount to that item only.
Order discounts
Use the Discount chip at payment, or Adjust in QSR Mode, to discount the whole order.
Quick Select
The Apply Discount window offers quick choices and a preview of the new total before you confirm.
Tip left alone
Order discounts apply to the goods and tax, never to the tip.
Permission controlled
Roles decide who can discount, and a per-user maximum caps the percentage.
Reported daily
The daily sales report totals discounts given, so you can see what they cost.
Discounting a single item
Sometimes only one item needs a discount: a dented tin, the last pastry of the day, a shirt with a loose button. Tap the line in the cart to open Edit Item and use Apply Discount. Choose Percentage or Fixed, type the value and the price preview shows the new line total before you save the change.
Line discounts work the same way on phones, tablets and in QSR Mode, where the Edit Item window has Disc. Amt and Disc. Type fields. The discount prints on the receipt so the customer can see the saving, and it is recorded on the sale so your reports show both what was charged and what was given away.
Discounting the whole order
For a discount on everything, such as a loyalty reward or a staff meal, use the order discount. On the tablet payment screen tap the Discount chip to open Apply Discount, pick percentage or fixed, use Quick Select for common values and check the preview. Payment Details then shows the discount and the final amount.
In QSR Mode, tap Adjust on the cart to open Adjust Order, which has the discount, a tip field and loyalty points in one place. The order discount applies to the goods and tax but not to the tip, so a server's tip is never reduced by a discount. The summary shows the order total, any points redeemed and the final total.
- Line: Edit Item, Apply Discount
- Order on tablets: Discount chip at payment
- Order on phones: Adjust on the payment screen
- Order in QSR Mode: Adjust Order
Who can give discounts
Discounts are money out of the till, so SeroPOS lets you decide who can give them. Role permissions in the Admin hub control access to price and discount changes and to the Adjust button. A cashier without the permission sees a lock and can ask a manager to approve the discount once with their password.
In the web back office, each user can also have a maximum sales discount percentage. A shift lead might be allowed up to 15 percent while a new cashier is held at 5. For discounts that should happen every time without anyone deciding, such as a happy hour or a category promotion, set up automatic discount rules instead.
Seeing what discounts cost
Every discount is recorded with the sale. The daily sales report in the app has a Discounts card for the period, and the back office daily sales report has a Discounts Applied section. The profit and loss report counts sell discounts as a cost, so you can see how much margin went on discounting in a week or a month.
If discounts look high, open the sales in the back office to see which ones carried them. Pair that with role permissions and per-user limits, and discounting stays a tool you choose to use rather than a leak. If you use QuickBooks, discounts post to the discount account you map in the integration settings.
Frequently asked questions
How do I apply a discount in SeroPOS?
For one item, tap the cart line, choose Apply Discount and enter a percentage or fixed amount. For the whole order, tap the Discount chip on the tablet payment screen, or Adjust on phones and in QSR Mode. A preview shows the new total before you confirm.
Can I stop staff from giving discounts?
Yes. Remove discount and price-change permission from their role in the Admin hub under Users & Roles. They can still ask a manager to approve a discount with an Admin or Manager password. You can also set a maximum discount percentage per user in the back office.
Does a discount reduce the tip?
No. An order discount in Adjust Order applies to the goods and tax but not the tip. Staff can apply a discount and add a tip on the same order, and the tip is recorded in full for the server.
Can I give a fixed dollar discount instead of a percentage?
Yes. Both line and order discounts offer Percentage or Fixed. Choose Fixed and type the dollar amount, such as $5 off. The preview shows the new total, and the receipt shows the discount so the customer can see what they saved.
Can discounts apply automatically?
Yes, with discount rules in the web back office. Set a rule by product, brand, category or location, with a start and end date, priority and the customer or price groups it covers. Manual discounts at the till still work alongside them for one-off cases.
