SeroPOS vs Square

SeroPOS and Square at a glance
As of 2026, Square offers a free-to-start POS app with paid plans for restaurants and retail, and it processes card payments through Square's own payment service. It has a large ecosystem around the till, including online stores, invoices and, in some countries, payroll and banking, and it is widely available in the US, Canada and several other countries.
SeroPOS is a POS app sold on monthly plans that runs on Windows, Mac, iPad, Android and phones. It doesn't process cards itself. Instead it connects to terminals from Global Payments, Moneris or Gravity Payments, so the till and the merchant account are separate choices. That suits owners who want to negotiate processing or keep an existing provider.
Devices and hardware
Square, as of 2026, generally runs on its own devices, such as its register and terminal, and on iPads and phones through its apps. Its hardware is designed to work together and is easy to set up, which many small businesses value. Check Square's site for the devices it supports in your country.
SeroPOS runs on the devices you already have: a Windows PC at the counter, a Mac in the office, an iPad or Android tablet on the floor, or the Global Payments T650P handheld. Receipt printers connect over the network, USB or Bluetooth, and the app can scan your local network to find printers automatically.
Card payments and processing
With Square, card processing is generally part of the package: you sign up, and payments run through Square at its published rates. It is simple, and there is no separate merchant account to arrange. Using a different processor with Square's own POS is generally not an option, as of 2026.
SeroPOS sends the sale amount to a Global Payments, Moneris or Gravity Payments terminal, and the result and any tip come back to the till. Because the processor is your choice, you can compare offers. Send us a recent processing statement and we'll quote a rate. A payment outbox and duplicate-charge guard protect sales when a connection is slow.
Restaurant and retail tools
Both products cover restaurants and shops. SeroPOS includes kitchen tickets with printer routing, tables, takeout, a quick-service grid and Kiosk Mode in Standard, and reward points are built in. Pro adds the floor plan designer, multi-till, CRM, recipes and production, advanced reports, QuickBooks and WooCommerce. A KDS Mode turns a tablet into a kitchen display.
For shops, the SeroPOS back office tracks lot numbers, expiry dates, serial and IMEI numbers, stock transfers between locations and barcode labels on sticker sheets. Square also offers restaurant and retail features across its plans; compare the specific tools you need on its current site. Retail Mode gives the till shop wording.
Switching from Square
Most switches start with the product list. Export your items from Square as a spreadsheet if it lets you, then match the columns to the SeroPOS product template and import it from the back office or the app's Import Products tool. Set categories, tax rates and modifiers first, so imported products land in the right place.
Before your first live day, run the 14-day trial on the devices you plan to use, connect your printer and card terminal, and do a few test sales and a refund. Check the end-of-day report against your test sales. If you need help, the in-app Live Support chat reaches our team from the Admin screen.
Frequently asked questions
Is SeroPOS a good Square alternative?
It can be, if you want to choose your own card processor or run your till on a Windows PC or Mac. SeroPOS works with Global Payments, Moneris and Gravity Payments terminals. If you prefer one company for both POS and payments, Square's bundled approach may suit you better.
Can I use SeroPOS without Square payments?
SeroPOS doesn't use Square for payments at all. It connects to Global Payments, Moneris or Gravity Payments terminals, and you can also record cash, cheque and custom payment methods. Send us a statement and we'll quote a processing rate.
Is SeroPOS available in Canada?
Yes. SeroPOS supports Canadian tax setups such as GST plus PST groups, HST and GST plus QST, Moneris and Global Payments terminals, and QuickBooks Desktop Canadian edition and QuickBooks Online for Canadian companies.
How does SeroPOS pricing compare with Square?
SeroPOS publishes two plans: Standard at $30 a month and Pro at $50 a month, each with a 14-day free trial and no card needed. We don't quote Square's prices here because they change; check their site for current plans, hardware and processing costs, and compare the total for your setup.
Can I try SeroPOS before I switch?
Yes. Both plans have a 14-day free trial with no card needed, and the trial includes every feature. Download the app on a device you already own, add demo data or import your products from a spreadsheet, and run a few test sales before you change anything at your counter.
