Units and sub-units for cases, packs and kilos
Units tell SeroPOS how you count each product, from single items to kilograms and litres. Sub-units link bigger and smaller measures, so you can buy by the case and sell by the bottle without doing the maths.
Units and sub units in SeroPOS
Your own units
Create the units you need: each, kilogram, litre, dozen, box or anything else.
Decimal quantities
Allow decimals on a unit so you can sell 0.75 kg of cheese or 1.5 litres.
Larger units
Define a case as 10 each, or a box as 24 cans, and SeroPOS converts between them.
Buy big, sell small
Purchase by the case and sell by the unit; stock is kept in the base unit.
Sell by weight
Weighed products read the scale or take a typed weight for decimal quantities.
Recipes in sub-units
Recipes can use a sub-unit, such as grams of an ingredient you buy by the kilo.
Count each product the way you sell it
Every product in SeroPOS has a unit. For most items that is simply each, or pieces. Deli counters, bulk stores and bars need more. Units are created in the back office under Products › Units, or in the app under Admin › Units, and each one can allow decimal quantities. Turn decimals on for kilograms or litres, and leave them off for items that are only sold whole.
A default unit can be set in Business Settings › Product, so new products start with the one you use most. Name units the way staff talk about them, such as Each, Kg or Litre, because the unit name appears on product records, purchases and invoices across the system. Keep names short.
Sub-units: cases, packs and dozens
A sub-unit relationship links a larger unit to a smaller one. In the app, Admin › Units has a Made of setting: a Case is made of 10 Each. In the back office, a unit can be defined as a multiple of a base unit. Turn on sub-units in Business Settings › Product to use them on products.
With that in place, a purchase can be recorded as 5 cases and SeroPOS adds 50 units to stock. At the till, the same product sells one at a time, and the stock count is always in the base unit. Staff never have to convert by hand. Counts stay exact.
- Case = 10 × Each
- Box = 24 × Can
- Kilogram with decimals for weighed goods
Decimals and weighed items
Products with Enable Weight are sold by weight. When one is added to the cart, the app reads the weight from a connected scale, or asks staff to enter the weight on a keypad if there is no scale. The quantity goes onto the line with decimals, priced by the unit.
For pre-packed goods weighed in advance, the web back office has weighing-scale barcode settings for the label prefix and the length of the SKU and quantity parts. At the till, the SeroPOS app takes the weight from a connected scale or the keypad, so a deli or butcher that pre-packs should weigh at the counter or type the weight printed on the pack.
Units in purchasing and recipes
Because units convert, purchasing and recipes use whichever is natural. A supplier invoice in cases, a production run that uses grams from a kilo bag, and a sale by the each all land in the same stock count. Your counts stay in one consistent unit everywhere. That keeps reports simple.
Reports can filter by unit too. The Stock Report and Trending Products report both take a unit filter, which is useful for seeing how much you sell by weight compared with by the piece. Clean, consistent units make those comparisons reliable, so filter by unit and compare periods side by side.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sell products in decimal quantities?
Yes. Allow decimals on the product's unit, such as kilograms or litres, and the till accepts quantities like 0.75. Weighed products can take the weight straight from a connected scale or from a typed entry. Leave decimals off for items sold whole.
How do I buy by the case and sell by the unit?
Turn on sub-units in Business Settings › Product, then define the case as a multiple of the base unit, for example 10 × Each. Record purchases in cases and sell in units; SeroPOS keeps stock in the base unit. Stock counts stay consistent.
Can I set up units on the POS app?
Yes. Admin › Units in the SeroPOS app lets you create units, allow decimal quantities and set what a larger unit is made of, such as a case of 10. The back office has the same settings under Products › Units.
Do recipes understand sub-units?
Yes. Recipe ingredients take a quantity and a sub-unit, so a recipe can use grams of an ingredient you buy by the kilogram. Recipes and production are part of the Pro plan. Set up the sub-unit first. Then build the recipe.
Does SeroPOS work with weighing scales?
Yes. The app connects to USB, serial and network scales on supported platforms. Without a scale, staff can type the weight for each item. Scales are set up under Add Weighing Scale in the side drawer.
